Phantom Blade Zero’s boss list is a moving target: press counts range from 62 to 75 depending on how you treat phase names and Archive titles. This guide uses the 63-encounter structure — 62 numbered fights plus the prologue sparring, with the true final split into two name bars — and walks the whole route region by region. Every entry covers where the fight sits, what the tells ask of you, and what you walk away with.

How to read this boss order

The 63 slots follow the campaign’s twelve chapter labels across nine regions. Multi-phase bosses occupy one row unless they are genuinely separate encounters, which is why a 75-name list collapses down to this count. If you see “Zho Shang” in a community post, that is a transliteration variant of Zuo Shang — not a separate fight.

Two structural rules matter before you start:

  • Blue means parry, red means dodge. A timed block costs no Sha-Chi and drains the boss’s; red attacks ignore guard and parry entirely, so dodge into them for a Ghostep.
  • Empty the Sha-Chi bar to Breach. Breached enemies cannot block and take extra damage — this is your main punish window, and switching weapons refills the bar mid-fight.

Prologue and Weeping Creek Valley (1–9)

The prologue is a tutorial in disguise. Zuo Shang’s sparring bout and the Shadow Sovereign sequence both end in cutscenes, and The Hunt’s cart fight is about guarding sickles and dodging the hook late. Do not wait for a results screen — the game moves on without one.

Weeping Creek Valley opens the real difficulty curve:

  1. Jagged Steel (Riverbed) — sidestep the leap, guard the spin, cleanse bleed. Drops Jagged Steel.
  2. Peng Meng (Axemaster’s Fall) — blue streak parries, orange flare dodges, and the red-flash grab lands roughly 0.6 seconds after the flash. Punish the chop and roar. Drops the Dread Axe.
  3. Aberrant Three-Faced Puppet (Challenge Rift, optional) — overtuned for when you find it; return leveled and burst one mask at a time.
  4. Hua (Flesh Lily Fields, optional) — a Bleed-immune Puppet. Leave the lily patches alone and bring a non-Bleed parry weapon.
  5. The Hunt, Sixfold Scythe (Great Waterfall) — four sickles in phase two; move sideways, never backpedal.
  6. Gold-Masked One (1/5) (Long Pillar Overlook, optional) — bait counters, parry, punish the guard break.

Crimson Forest and Village of Lu (10–22)

Crimson Forest is where parry timing stops being forgiving. Bai Chilian at the Threadbound Great Tree is the region’s wall: her cuts land ahead of the animation, and phase two is a fresh health bar, so do not burn every gourd early. Yucong shares that tree as an optional superboss and demands the Blazing Edge equipped to trigger its third phase — without it, you lose the Chaos Twin Daggers and the Four Great Puppets route.

Village of Lu is denser with optionals. Dusk at the Broken Puppet Pit spawns a duplicate at 40% with its own bar; kill the copy first, then clear adds. Mu Xiaokui has a secret third phase if you finish the Young Mistress questline beforehand, adding Jade Dancer and Iron Fiend.

Boss Region · Ch. Type Reward Difficulty
Bai Chilian CF 2 Main White Serpent & Crimson Viper† 4
Yucong CF 2 / 10 Optional Freezing Chaos† 5
Zhuo Bi VoL 3 Main Bastion 3
Dusk VoL 3 Optional Puppeteer’s Bell 4
Mu Xiaokui VoL 3 Main Wild Oriole; Fiend Saws† 4

Zhuo Bi is the region’s teaching fight: parries drain his shield bar, and when it empties he kneels for ten to fifteen seconds. Dodging does nothing to that bar — this is a parry check, not a dodge check.

Pangzhen and the Mandate Encampment (23–39)

Pangzhen is the largest region and the one most likely to overwhelm you with optional content. The story path runs Blaze, Cavalrybane, Wu Xuan, Gu Wanyue, Xie Qiudong, Chang Hong, Flame, and Soulclaimer — but the region’s real value is in its side fights.

Flame, the Lion Dance Grandmaster, is the standout. His fire stream breaks guard, so dash sideways rather than blocking, and Flameward cuts fire damage and Burn by half. In the pole phase, the last Ho-Ho dancer stops at roughly 25% health and must be executed with the interact prompt to end it — attacking the poles themselves does nothing.

The Mandate Encampment holds six optionals, including Chief Disciple, a seven-man formation that becomes the Sword of Despair. Kill the six attendants first; they heal him at their own HP cost, and their synced strike can one-shot you. If you spared Red earlier, she joins the fight — kill her first.

Mountain of Imprisonment and Meigu Lake (40–53)

The Mountain of Imprisonment is almost entirely optional, and its five fights gate the Lady’s Shrine content. Huangxing is the hardest of them: watch for the thin horizontal red flash before his hits, and avoid fighting near pillars or the statue, which hide his wind-ups. Bi Feng at the Commander’s Platform drops Juggernaut and is one half of the true-ending pair.

Meigu Lake is where the superboss tier begins. Blizzard Blademaster at Whiteshadow’s Fall has one of the longest fights in the game and a freeze lockdown that punishes blocking the setup. Ring the bell before the cutscene or you lose the checkpoint entirely. Heartpiercer at the White Serpent House wants you to guard the blade streams rather than dashing — dashing costs far more — and to keep Sha-Chi above 100 throughout.

The Gold-Masked One chain continues here with entries three and four, at the Midlake Long Pillar and the Phantom Illusionist Ruins.

Mirage Estate and Mount Soulrend (54–63)

Mirage Estate is short and sharp. Yuding, Qiu Feng, and Lei Dang form the main path, with Mo Yuan — the fifth and final Gold-Masked One — waiting at the Mirage Long Pillar as the last Lóng Pillar. Mo Yuan has 223,200 HP and demands patient counters rather than aggression.

Mount Soulrend closes the campaign with a gauntlet. Crusher and Saw hide behind a snow cloud for two to three seconds, and every red flash is unparryable. Leng Tu is not a duel but a five-stage sequence — Puppet Scavenger, then Cavalrybane and Heartpiercer, then Yubi and Yuding, then Leng Tu himself, then Meng Hua. His own moveset is undocumented; footage shows purple blade swings and an explosion, so treat purple as your burst window and use summoned allies as sponges.

Meng Hua ends the standard route. Stay mobile through the rotating lasers, collect the dark fragments to blunt the world-ending finisher, and dodge the red follow-up the instant the screen darkens.

The true final boss and the 63rd slot

The 63rd encounter is Zuo Shang, True Lóng, and it is gated behind the true-ending route. You need to finish Secrets at the Heart of the Lake — six flowers, Dusk, four masks, Mirror, Puppet No. 99, and the High Elder — then talk to Inanis for the Violet Blossom, win all five Lóng Pillars, and take the gold portal atop Soulrend Cliff after Meng Hua.

The fight runs in two forms. The first is the Shadow Sovereign with golden blades, snap-summoned swords, a seven-hit lunge, and a four-kick aerial. Chip the stagger and do not get greedy. The second form, True Lóng, has 240,630 HP — the highest in the game — and sweeps the arena with giant gold blades while a dragon head rises. Stay close, dodge the breath, and punish the gold charges. A button-prompt finisher ends it.

Skipping the lake quest gives you the Annihilation ending and no Zuo Shang fight at all. Rewards on the true route include Aureate, Broken Long Body, Radiant Heart, and the With Heart and Blood achievement.

Optional superbosses worth a detour

Superboss Unlock Reward D
Blizzard Blademaster Meigu frozen lake → Whiteshadow’s Fall; ring bell first Whiteshadow; spawns Puppet No. 99 5
Yucong Triple Threat → Aberrant Puppet → Mirage chapter → return to Threadbound Tree; Blazing Edge equipped Freezing Chaos 5
Mo Yuan Win first four Lóng Pillars, then Mirage Long Pillar Bastion of Mo Mask 5
Chief Disciple Mandate, Three Towers field Swordsman’s Summon 5
Dusk Six Memory Flowers → ravine past Broken Puppet Pit Puppeteer’s Bell 4

Rematches, NG+, and what carries over

There is no dedicated boss rush at launch. Pre-release interviews mentioned one, but the launch structure points to New Game+ as the replay route — treat boss-rush claims as unconfirmed. The only rematches are the five Human-Faced Banyan Trees, which run waves into a boss fight, sometimes a duo. Completing all five earns Heart of the Banyan and the Even Trees Know Sorrow trophy.

New Cycle carries equipment, progression items, Ability Training, and Archives, but resets quests, maps, key items, and days. The weapon cap rises from 30 to 35, Hellwalker unlocks, and 66 Days is a separate save with bell-only autosave and a permanent Undying Grudge ending.

Sources & confidence

The boss table and strategies draw primarily on Kungfupunk’s boss list, pbz.guide, KeenGamer, and AllThingsHow, with Atlas and Game8 for Yucong and Meng Hua. The biggest uncertainty is the count itself: 58 entries is not reproducible from any fetched source, and defensible totals range from 62 fights to 75 name strings. Leng Tu’s moveset is undocumented, True Lóng has no full attack list, and elemental multipliers are datamine-only and uncorroborated — HP values also vary by source and cycle, so no number here is universal.
