Phantom Blade Zero’s ending is decided long before the final boss door. Two flags — the Violet Blossom and Bloodline Awakening — determine whether Soul walks away with a new heart or dies on Mount Soulrend, and the game gives you very little warning when the window closes.

The Two Flags That Decide Everything

The cleanest model of Phantom Blade Zero’s endings comes from community documentation: two binary flags, set at different points in the campaign, produce four named outcomes [22].

Flag A — Violet Blossom. Awarded in the Realm of Mirage at the end of The Lake, when you speak to Inanis. It requires all ten pre-Mirage purple Mysteries to be finished first. The Violet Blossom is the true-ending flag [22].

Flag B — Bloodline Awakening. Completed by clearing all five Lóng (Long) Pillars. The fifth sits inside Mirage Estate, behind the Green Serpent House door, so this flag cannot be finished early. All five pillars award Phantom and Blade and temper Sanguine into Infernal Rouge [6][9][12].

Everything else — Tales, Memory Flowers, Quick Hand’s chests, Acolyte Masks — feeds into these two flags or into the checklist that gates the Violet Blossom. They are not independent ending switches.

The Four Named Endings

PowerPyx’s launch guide describes only two endings, “Normal” and “True” [1]. KeenGamer and wikily document four [5][22], and S-GAME’s pre-launch material claimed eight [17]. The four-outcome model is the most detailed available; treat the count as medium-high confidence, not settled fact.

Ending Trigger What happens Reward
Final Battle (true) Violet Blossom and Bloodline Awakening Zuo Shang appears after Leng Tu and Meng Hua, leads Soul into the Fallen Dream, and duels him in two forms. Soul wins and leaves with a new heart. With Heart and Blood; Aureate; Broken Long Body; Radiant Heart; Legacy outfit
Long’s Roar Violet Blossom only — pillars unfinished Zuo Shang kills Meng Hua. The duel is unwinnable. Soul is banished to die on Mount Soulrend. All Dreams Must End; Blizzard outfit
Annihilation Violet Blossom missing Meng Hua revives, mocks Soul, and destroys the Wulin. All Dreams Must End; no unique trophy
Undying Grudge The 66 Days counter reaches 0 Zuo Shang pours wine on Soul’s grave and mourns his brother. The run ends permanently. None

The practical reading: Annihilation is the default failure state, Long’s Roar is the partial-success state, and Final Battle is the only outcome where Soul survives with a new heart.

Final Boss Structure

The endgame runs in a fixed sequence regardless of your flags:

  1. Leng Tu — penultimate boss.
  2. Meng Hua, the Merciful Lady of the Blossom Veil — the standard final boss.
  3. Zuo Shang — the true final boss, fought in two forms.

Zuo Shang’s second form is true-route only [5]. If you are on the Long’s Roar path, the duel against him is scripted to be unwinnable — you are not failing a fight you could have won. If Violet Blossom was never claimed, Zuo Shang does not appear in this role at all and Meng Hua resolves the story herself.

One wiki places the final lock at the start of the Leng Tu fight rather than at the bell [12]. That is a conflict worth knowing about before you commit.

Order of Operations: The True-Ending Route

This is the sequence that produces Final Battle. Steps 4 and 5 are community-checklist items whose strict flag status is unconfirmed [5].

  1. Finish the ten purple Mysteries before the Green Serpent House door: Deep in the Valley, Illusion of Inanis, Sha-Chi Powered Boat, Allure of Vanity, Illusory Pipa, Pillars of Kunlun, Whence the Weeping, The Herald’s Illusion, Crimson Manor, Secrets at the Heart of the Lake [1].
  2. Inside Secrets at the Heart of the Lake: collect all 4 Acolyte Masks, both Crystal Eyes, clear Phantom Illusionist Ruins, socket the eyes into the statue, and destroy the ritual [12].
  3. Clear four Lóng Pillars before the Green Serpent door. The fifth is inside Mirage Estate. All five complete Bloodline Awakening [6][9].
  4. Defeat Zhu Yuan (Pangzhen tower bottom) and Bi Feng (Cavern Passage) — community checklists include both, but strict flag status is unconfirmed [5].
  5. Complete all 16 Quick Hand’s Requests. The last three are in Mirage. Again, community checklist, strict flag unconfirmed [5][8].
  6. Before The Last Chance, talk to Inanis. With the checklist complete she says “Follow your own heart!”; otherwise she warns you [22].
  7. Beat Leng Tu → Meng Hua → Zuo Shang.

Points of No Return and Soft Gates

There are two hard gates and four soft ones.

Hard gates:

  • Green Serpent House door (Pangzhen backstreets) — the first hard point of no return. The game warns you [1][16]. Inserting all three serpent relics opens the hidden passage to Mirage Estate.
  • The Last Chance bell on Mount Soulrend — the final gate. It warns you even on a perfect run. Regions reopen after the credits, so post-game cleanup is possible [1][5].

Soft gates — these do not end the game, but they close specific quests:

  • Jing Ye — closes Apprentice Healer.
  • Bai Chilian — closes Flesh Lily hand-in, A Healer’s Mercy, Honor Among Thieves, Purge the Sect, Festering Secret, and the acceptance window for Secrets of the Baishan Sect.
  • Mu Xiaokui — closes the five-ribbon Young Mistress quest. Stricter deadline: before Puppet Testing Grounds.
  • Pangzhen transition — closes The Journey Home reporting and the first Young Master Lan conversation.

How to Avoid the Failure States

The failure states are not difficulty checks. They are bookkeeping failures.

To avoid Annihilation: claim the Violet Blossom. That means all ten purple Mysteries done before Mirage, and talking to Inanis in the Realm of Mirage at the end of The Lake. If you skip the purple questline entirely, Meng Hua revives and the Wulin falls — no amount of boss skill changes it.

To avoid Long’s Roar: finish the fifth Lóng Pillar inside Mirage Estate. Four pillars is not enough. The Bastion of Mó Mask is the completion marker; if you do not have it, you are on the partial route.

To avoid Undying Grudge: do not let the 66 Days counter hit zero. This only applies in the 66 Days mode — a second-cycle mode with a separate save, no manual saving, autosave at bells, and one day lost per death [21]. No trophy requires it, so if you are chasing the Platinum, skip it.

Missables That Feed the Endings

Region / gate Missable Deadline
Weeping A Severed Mindseal first stone Before leaving the valley
Weeping Apprentice Healer Before Jing Ye
Weeping Purge the Sect; Festering Secret Before Bai Chilian
Crimson Flesh Lily hand-in; A Healer’s Mercy; Honor Among Thieves Before Bai Chilian
Crimson Secrets of the Baishan Sect — accept Before Bai Chilian
Crimson Same tale — inspect Bi Taotao Before Yubi
Village of Lu The Journey Home — report Before Pangzhen
Village of Lu Young Master Lan — first talk Before Pangzhen
Village of Lu Young Mistress — 5 ribbons Before Mu Xiaokui
Pangzhen All ten purple Mysteries Before Green Serpent House door
Pangzhen Quick Hand — all 16 treasures Before The Last Chance
Pangzhen Heart of the Banyan — 5 trees Before final ascent
Meigu Secrets at the Heart of the Lake Before Mirage
Meigu Illusory Pipa Before Mountain of Imprisonment
Mount Soulrend Everything unfinished The Last Chance

One extra trap: killing Red at the first Dovecote encounter locks some extra collectibles but not trophies [1].

What Changes Between Endings

The endings do not branch mid-fight. They branch on what Soul has claimed about his own history and what he has mastered.

Annihilation is the Wulin’s failure state — Meng Hua returns, the cult’s promise is fulfilled, and Soul’s cure-hunt was for nothing.

Long’s Roar is the brother’s tragedy. Zuo Shang does what Soul could not, kills Meng Hua, and the duel that follows is not winnable. Soul is banished to die on Mount Soulrend. The trophy name, All Dreams Must End, is shared with Annihilation.

Final Battle is the only route where Zuo Shang appears as the true final boss in two forms, and the only one where Soul leaves with a new heart. The reward set — With Heart and Blood, Aureate, Broken Long Body, Radiant Heart, Legacy outfit — is unique to it.

For the broader quest and collectible structure that feeds these flags, see the walkthrough and the missables checklist. If you are still deciding how much of the purple Mystery chain to commit to, the true ending checklist breaks it down step by step.

Sources & confidence

The main sources are PowerPyx’s launch guide (two endings, the seven missable trophies, and the points of no return), KeenGamer and wikily (the four-ending model and the two-flag system), and the PBZ Wiki and GameSpot/GameRant for the Lóng Pillar locations and Bloodline Awakening completion. The biggest uncertainty is the ending count itself: PowerPyx documents two, community guides document four, and S-GAME pre-launch claimed eight. The four-outcome model is the most detailed and internally consistent, but treat it as medium-high confidence rather than confirmed. The strict flag status of the Zhu Yuan/Bi Feng kills and the 16 Quick Hand’s Requests is also unconfirmed — they appear on community checklists but no source states they are hard requirements.
