The true ending in Phantom Blade Zero is not a single choice at the final bell — it is a chain of purple Mysteries, hidden collectibles, and one conversation that most players miss because it happens inside a dream. Get the flags in order and Zuo Shang waits for you after Meng Hua falls; miss one and the game quietly hands you a lesser fate.
The two flags that decide everything
The cleanest model of the endings comes from community datamining, and it reduces the whole thing to two binary flags:
- Flag A — Violet Blossom. Finish all ten purple-icon Mysteries before entering Mirage Estate, then speak to Inanis in the Realm of Mirage at the end of The Lake. This is the flag that unlocks the true route.
- Flag B — Bloodline Awakening. Complete all five Lóng (Long) Pillars. The fifth sits inside Mirage Estate, so this flag cannot be finished early.
The four documented outcomes map onto those flags directly:
| Ending | Flags | Outcome | Reward |
|---|---|---|---|
| Final Battle (true) | A + B | Zuo Shang appears after Leng Tu and Meng Hua, leads Soul into the Fallen Dream, duels in two forms; Soul wins and leaves with a new heart | With Heart and Blood; Aureate; Broken Long Body; Radiant Heart; Legacy outfit |
| Long’s Roar | A only | Zuo Shang kills Meng Hua; the duel is unwinnable; Soul is banished to die on Mount Soulrend | All Dreams Must End; Blizzard outfit |
| Annihilation | A missing | Meng Hua revives, mocks Soul, destroys the Wulin | All Dreams Must End; no unique trophy |
| Undying Grudge | 66 Days counter = 0 | Zuo Shang pours wine on Soul’s grave and mourns his brother | None; the run ends permanently |
PowerPyx’s launch guide describes only two endings (“Normal” and “True”); KeenGamer and wikily document four; S-GAME pre-launch claimed eight. Treat the four-outcome model as Med-High confidence — it is the most detailed account available, not a confirmed one.
The two cutoffs
There are exactly two hard points of no return, and both warn you.
- The Green Serpent House door (Pangzhen backstreets). This is the first hard gate. Inserting the three serpent relics — Red Serpent Tongue, Black Serpent Fang, White Serpent Eye — opens the hidden passage to Mirage Estate. All ten purple Mysteries must be done before you cross. The game warns you.
- The Last Chance (the bell on Mount Soulrend). This is the final gate. It warns you even on a perfect run. One wiki places the lock slightly earlier, at the start of the Leng Tu fight — so if you want maximum safety, treat Leng Tu as the deadline.
Everything else is a soft gate: Jing Ye, Bai Chilian, Mu Xiaokui, and the Pangzhen transition. Those lock specific quests and collectibles, not the ending itself.
Deadline-ordered true ending checklist
This is the order that respects every cutoff. Region order runs Weeping Creek Valley → Crimson Forest → Village of Lu → Pangzhen → Mandate Encampment → Meigu Lake → Mountain of Imprisonment → Mirage Estate → Mount Soulrend. The two lake/mountain regions interleave through the Illusory Pipa chain; the checklist below treats Meigu first.
- Weeping Creek Valley. Start Deep in the Valley and claim the first Long Pillar at Lóng Pillar Overlook using the Rusted Loong Key. Finish A Severed Mindseal’s first stone before leaving the valley. Complete Apprentice Healer before Jing Ye.
- Crimson Forest, before Bai Chilian. Collect all six Inanis Memory Flowers — at 2/3 HP in her phase 2, the Chord drains her Sha-Chi. Start Illusion of Inanis, Whence the Weeping, and Crimson Manor. Claim Long Pillar 2 at Mirrorwood/Parting Mists after Iron Fever.
- Village of Lu. Finish Illusory Pipa before Mountain of Imprisonment. Collect all six Firefly flowers to clear the poison mist at Broken Puppet Pit Entrance, unlocking Dusk and the Illusory Pipa Head. Gather Mu Xiaokui’s five ribbons before Mu Xiaokui — stricter, before Puppet Testing Grounds.
- Pangzhen and Mandate. Complete Sha-Chi Powered Boat, Allure of Vanity (all six Yan’er flowers), Pillars of Kunlun, The Herald’s Illusion, and Secrets at the Heart of the Lake. Then take the Sha-Chi boat to Meigu.
- Meigu Lake. Claim Long Pillar 3 at the Midlake Lóng Pillar Dock. Collect the four Acolyte Masks, clear the Four Guardians’ Mirror, and finish Secrets at the Heart of the Lake.
- Mountain and the Green Serpent House door. Collect the Yin Crystal Eye, then finish the remaining purple Mysteries. Confirm all ten are done and manual save before the door.
- Mirage Estate. Claim Long Pillar 5 in the Covered Corridor. Both Crystal Eyes should already be socketed in Phantom Illusionist Ruins before this point. Finish the last Quick Hand’s Requests. Complete Bloodline Awakening.
- Before The Last Chance. Talk to Inanis. Complete her checklist to hear “Follow your own heart!” — otherwise she warns you instead.
- Beat Leng Tu → Meng Hua → Zuo Shang. The second Zuo Shang form is true-route only.
The ten purple Mysteries
These are purple-icon Story-tab quests, distinct from the 33 Tales. The first ten must be finished before entering Mirage Estate; Bloodline Awakening completes after the fifth Long Pillar.
- Deep in the Valley
- Illusion of Inanis
- Sha-Chi Powered Boat
- Allure of Vanity
- Illusory Pipa
- Pillars of Kunlun
- Whence the Weeping
- The Herald’s Illusion
- Crimson Manor
- Secrets at the Heart of the Lake
The four Acolyte Masks
All four are used at the Four Guardians’ Mirror, frozen in northwest Meigu Lake. Using them shatters the mirror and opens the Phantom Illusionist Ruins — home to Long Pillar 4, the Eye statue, and the Secrets finale.
| Mask | Location | Access |
|---|---|---|
| Yanru’s Blazing Mask | Lu — northern farming terraces near Engine Giant Remains/Terraces; scarecrow opposite the shield-puppet yard, shallow pond under the lantern tree | None; fire |
| Leiting’s Thunder Mask | Pangzhen — southwest cliffside/slums near Old Man Gen’s House | Flaming Mane to burn brambles near Pond of Fading Song; thunder |
| Guhe’s Venom Mask | Meigu — East Dock island, far eastern end; scarecrow ringed by birds | Boat; poison |
| Hansui’s Frost Mask | Crimson Manor depths; duo with Puppet Scavenger | Puppet’s Tongue; ice; also Eye [Yang] and Alloyed Scythe Blade |
Both Crystal Eyes and the five Long Pillars
The two Crystal Eyes are socketed into the statue in Phantom Illusionist Ruins after the realm boss. Yin is enforced first, because Yang requires the Puppet’s Tongue that Yin’s chain provides.
- Eye [Yin] — from The Herald’s Illusion. Three portals: Lu Puppet Testing Grounds after Yuzan; Mandate Encampment final arena after Huangxing; Mountain of Imprisonment final arena. After the third, speak to the hanging puppet.
- Eye [Yang] — from Crimson Manor. Open with the Puppet’s Tongue, descend the strings, ring the bell, beat Puppet Scavenger and Hansui.
The five Long Pillars can be claimed in any order, but the five Gold-Masked One duels escalate in a fixed sequence. All five complete Bloodline Awakening, award Phantom and Blade, and temper Sanguine into Infernal Rouge.
| # | Region | Route | Gate |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Weeping | Lóng Pillar Overlook; eastern locked cave | Deep in the Valley → Rusted Loong Key |
| 2 | Crimson | Mirrorwood/Parting Mists; after Iron Fever, right fork, grapple | Hunter’s Chain Sickle |
| 3 | Meigu (east island) | Midlake Lóng Pillar Dock; sail east | Sha-Chi Powered Boat |
| 4 | Phantom Illusionist Ruins | Four Guardians’ Mirror; third bell, smash barrier | 4 Acolyte Masks + Dread Axe |
| 5 | Mirage Estate | Covered Corridor → right → grapple | Green Serpent House door |
Pillars 1–4 must be done before the Green Serpent door; pillar 5 before The Last Chance. One outlier source (Kungfupunk) places a pillar in Mandate Encampment, but GameSpot, GameRant, KeenGamer, and the PBZ Wiki all place it in Phantom Illusionist Ruins — trust the majority.
The Pipa and the final Inanis conversation
The Illusory Pipa is one of the ten purple Mysteries, and it is the one that opens the Mountain of Imprisonment as an optional region. Its chain runs through the Firefly flowers in the Village of Lu: collect all six to clear the poison mist at Broken Puppet Pit Entrance, which unlocks Dusk, the Puppeteer and the Illusory Pipa Head. Finish the chain before entering Mountain of Imprisonment.
The final conversation with Inanis happens in the Realm of Mirage at the end of The Lake. This is where Flag A is confirmed. If your checklist is complete, she tells you “Follow your own heart!” If anything is missing, she warns you instead — and that warning is your last chance to back out and finish the work.
What changes each outcome
The difference between the true ending and the others is not a dialogue choice — it is whether Zuo Shang appears at all.
- With both flags, Zuo Shang steps in after Leng Tu and Meng Hua, leads Soul into the Fallen Dream, and fights in two forms. The second form is true-route only. Soul wins and leaves with a new heart.
- With only Flag A, Zuo Shang kills Meng Hua, but the brothers’ duel is unwinnable. Soul is banished to die on Mount Soulrend.
- Without Flag A, Meng Hua simply revives, mocks Soul, and destroys the Wulin. This is the default failure state.
- With the 66 Days counter at zero, none of the above matters — the run ends permanently with Zuo Shang mourning at Soul’s grave.
Two community-checklist items are worth flagging as uncertain: defeating Zhu Yuan (Pangzhen tower bottom) and Bi Feng (Cavern Passage), and completing all 16 Quick Hand’s Requests. Both appear on community true-ending checklists, but their strict flag status is unconfirmed. Do them anyway — they cost nothing and the downside of skipping them is a wasted run.
Sources & confidence
The main sources are PowerPyx’s launch guide (two endings, seven missable trophies), KeenGamer and wikily (four-ending model and the two-flag structure), the PBZ Wiki and Game8 (collectible locations and Memory Flower totals), and GameSpot/GameRant (Long Pillar placement). The biggest uncertainty is the ending count itself: PowerPyx documents two, community sources document four, and S-GAME pre-launch claimed eight. The two-flag model is the most detailed account available and is treated here as Med-High confidence, not confirmed fact.
