The four Acolyte Masks are the keys to one of Phantom Blade Zero’s most rewarding optional dungeons — and one of its easiest to walk past. Each mask sits behind a different traversal tool, a different region, and a different elemental gate, so a completionist run has to plan them across the whole campaign rather than sweep them up at the end. Collect all four, and the Four Guardians’ Mirror in north-west Meigu Lake shatters into the Phantom Illusionist Ruins.

The Four Masks at a Glance

Mask Region Access requirement Element
Yanru’s Blazing Mask Village of Lu — northern farming terraces None Fire
Leiting’s Thunder Mask Pangzhen — south-west cliffside/slums Flaming Mane Thunder
Guhe’s Venom Mask Meigu Lake — East Dock island Boat Poison
Hansui’s Frost Mask Crimson Manor depths Puppet’s Tongue Ice

The table is the short version. The order below is the order you can realistically obtain them, which is not the order they appear in the game’s own listing.

Yanru’s Blazing Mask — Village of Lu

The first mask is the only one with no tool gate, which makes it the natural starting point. Head to the northern farming terraces near the Engine Giant Remains/Terraces. Look for a scarecrow standing opposite a shield-puppet yard, and a shallow pond beneath a lantern tree. The mask is there.

Because nothing blocks it, Yanru’s mask is the one you can grab on your first pass through Lu. Do it before the region’s soft gates close in — the missables checklist tracks which Lu content expires and when.

Leiting’s Thunder Mask — Pangzhen Slums

Leiting’s mask sits in the south-west cliffside and slums, in the area around Old Man Gen’s House. The obstacle is bramble: you need the Flaming Mane to burn it away near the Pond of Fading Song.

The Flaming Mane is the same tool used for the Red Serpent House and Black Serpent House relics, so if you have been following the serpent chain you already own it. If not, prioritise it — the Mane is effectively the key to an entire tier of optional content.

Guhe’s Venom Mask — Meigu Lake East Dock

Guhe’s mask is on the East Dock island, at the far eastern end, on a scarecrow ringed by birds. Reaching it requires a boat.

Meigu Lake is where the mask hunt intersects the main progression, since the region interleaves with the Mountain of Imprisonment through the Illusory Pipa chain. The walkthrough covers the boat access in sequence; the short version is that you cannot shortcut to the East Dock before the lake opens up.

Hansui’s Frost Mask — Crimson Manor

The fourth mask is the most involved. Hansui’s Frost Mask lies in the depths of Crimson Manor, and the encounter there is a duo fight against the Puppet Scavenger alongside Hansui.

Two things gate this:

  • Puppet’s Tongue — required to open the Crimson Manor puppet lock. There is no “Crimson Manor Key”; the Tongue is the item.
  • The Herald’s Illusion — the Puppet’s Tongue is awarded after completing all three portals of this Mystery.

The same fight also drops the Eye [Yang] and the Alloyed Scythe Blade, which matters because the Eye is one half of the Crystal Puppet Eyes pair needed for the true-ending chain. Yin must come first — Yang requires the Tongue, so the order is enforced by design.

Opening the Four Guardians’ Mirror

With all four masks in hand, travel to the frozen north-west of Meigu Lake. Presenting the four masks at the Four Guardians’ Mirror shatters it, opening the Phantom Illusionist Ruins.

The Ruins are not a side room. They contain:

  • Long Pillar 4 — one of the five Lóng Pillars that complete Bloodline Awakening
  • An Eye statue where both Crystal Puppet Eyes are socketed
  • The finale of the Secrets at the Heart of the Lake Mystery

The Pillar 4 gate specifically requires the four Acolyte Masks plus the Dread Axe. The Dread Axe comes from killing Peng Meng during the Festering Secret Tale in Weeping Creek Valley, so that is a second prerequisite worth locking in early.

Completionist Checklist

Work down this list in order; each line assumes the one above it.

  1. Weeping Creek Valley — complete Festering Secret for the Dread Axe (before Bai Chilian).
  2. Village of Lu — collect Yanru’s Blazing Mask at the northern terraces.
  3. Pangzhen — obtain the Flaming Mane, then burn the brambles near the Pond of Fading Song for Leiting’s Thunder Mask.
  4. Meigu Lake — take a boat to the East Dock island for Guhe’s Venom Mask.
  5. Crimson Manor — finish The Herald’s Illusion for the Puppet’s Tongue, then descend and defeat Puppet Scavenger + Hansui for Hansui’s Frost Mask, Eye [Yang] and the Alloyed Scythe Blade.
  6. Meigu Lake, north-west — present all four masks at the Four Guardians’ Mirror.
  7. Phantom Illusionist Ruins — clear the realm, socket both Eyes, and claim Long Pillar 4.
  • Dread Axe obtained (Festering Secret)
  • Yanru’s Blazing Mask
  • Flaming Mane obtained
  • Leiting’s Thunder Mask
  • Boat access to Meigu East Dock
  • Guhe’s Venom Mask
  • Puppet’s Tongue (The Herald’s Illusion)
  • Hansui’s Frost Mask
  • Eye [Yin] and Eye [Yang] both held
  • Four Guardians’ Mirror shattered
  • Long Pillar 4 completed

Why the Masks Matter Beyond the Ruins

The mask chain feeds three separate completion tracks at once, which is why it is worth doing even on a run where you do not care about the Ruins themselves.

Bloodline Awakening. Long Pillar 4 is one of five. All five must be finished for the Bastion of Mó Mask, which is flag B for the true ending. Pillars 1–4 must be done before the Green Serpent House door; the fifth is inside Mirage Estate. The true ending checklist lays out the full flag structure.

Secrets at the Heart of the Lake. This is one of the ten purple Mysteries that must be finished before entering Mirage Estate. The Ruins finale — socketing both Eyes and destroying the ritual — is part of it.

The Eye pair. Eye [Yang] comes from the Hansui fight, so the mask hunt and the Eye hunt are the same trip. Yin comes from The Herald’s Illusion after all three portals; the game enforces Yin first.

Deadlines and Points of No Return

The masks themselves are not individually missable in the way that, say, Flesh Lily is. The hard gate is the Green Serpent House door, the first point of no return, which the game warns you about. All ten purple Mysteries — including the ones feeding this chain — must be complete before you pass through it.

The final gate is The Last Chance bell on Mount Soulrend. Regions reopen after the credits, so unfinished non-missable content can be cleaned up post-game, but the ending flags cannot be retroactively changed.

Sources & confidence

Compiled from the PBZ Wiki, KeenGamer, TechWiser, PowerPyx and Game8, cross-checked against community route documentation. The mask locations, access tools and the Four Guardians’ Mirror function are high confidence — multiple independent guides agree. The biggest uncertainty is the precise ordering of the Crimson Manor descent relative to the wider Mystery chain, and whether any mask has an unlisted soft deadline tied to the Pangzhen transition; treat the checklist above as the safe sequence rather than a proven one.
