Mu Xiaokui is the wall that stops most Village of Lu runs cold. Her two/three-hit bursts come fast, her spinning crimson rings punish hesitation, and the fight hides a third phase most players never see. Here is how to read her, survive the rings, and walk away with the Fiend Saws.

Location and Unlock

Mu Xiaokui is a main-path boss fought at the Lakeside in the Village of Lu, during Chapter 3. You cannot skip her — she sits on the critical route, so if you are following the story you will hit her whether you are ready or not.

She is listed as a multi-phase boss, and the compendium flags her as one of the encounters with a secret third phase. That phase is not part of the default fight. It is gated behind a separate condition: finishing the Young Mistress questline before you reach her. If you have not done that, you will fight the standard two-phase version and never see the Jade Dancer or the Iron Fiend.

Attack Tells

Mu Xiaokui’s kit is built around short, dense strings rather than long combos. The tells you need to internalize:

  • Two/three-hit bursts. Her bread-and-butter offense. These are short, so you punish after the burst, not during it.
  • Spinning crimson rings. The signature move. The rings end in a finisher that hits for roughly 307 on the reference difficulty. Standing in the rings is the single most common way to die here.
  • Blade chain. If you get caught by it, it costs 600+ health. This is the move that turns a clean attempt into a panic heal.
  • Delayed heavy. Lands at roughly 1.8 seconds — late enough that early dodges whiff and you eat it on the recovery.

The core rule applies throughout: blue means parry, red means dodge. Red ignores guard and parry entirely, so dodge into red attacks to pick up Ghostep rather than backing away.

Phase-by-Phase Strategy

Phase 1 — 46,890 HP

This is the read-the-room phase. She opens with bursts and mixes in the delayed heavy to catch players who dodge on reflex. Your job is to learn the burst rhythm and stop guessing.

Punish after each burst, not between individual hits. Two or three clean hits, then reset to neutral. Greed here is how you eat the blade chain.

Phase 2 — 62,520 HP

The health bar refills and she gets more aggressive. The crimson rings become the centerpiece — she spins them out and closes with the finisher. Dodge every hit separately. Trying to roll through the whole ring sequence in one motion will not work; each ring is its own dodge.

If you die here, you restart at phase 2 with full health and heals, so a phase-1 wipe is the only truly costly mistake.

Phase 3 (Hidden) — Jade Dancer + Iron Fiend

If you completed the Young Mistress content, a third phase opens with two adds: the Jade Dancer and the Iron Fiend, each sitting at 41,680 HP. This is a crowd-control problem layered on top of an already fast boss.

Best Weapon and Build

Mu Xiaokui rewards speed over reach. Her bursts are short and her punish windows are tight, so a fast weapon lets you land your two or three hits and get out before the next string starts.

  • Fast weapon as your main. The compendium explicitly recommends a fast weapon for this fight.
  • Parry-focused play. Blue tells are your damage windows; parrying drains her Sha-Chi and opens Breach.
  • Switch weapons to refill Sha-Chi. This is a resource reset, not just a damage swap — use it when you are running dry mid-fight.
  • Breach is your burst window. Empty her Sha-Chi, then dump damage while she cannot block.

If you are still deciding what to carry into the Village of Lu, our best weapons tier list covers the fast options, and combat system explained breaks down the Sha-Chi and Breach loop in detail.

Reward

Defeating Mu Xiaokui grants:

Reward Type
Wild Oriole Weapon
Fiend Saws Weapon (achievement/trophy)

The Fiend Saws are the headline drop and carry a trophy. Because boss drops are one-per-run, this is your only chance in the current playthrough — though missed optional bosses remain available in post-story free roam, and New Game+ carries your equipment forward.

Common Mistakes

  • Standing in the crimson rings. The finisher is the kill shot. Move.
  • Dodging the delayed heavy early. It lands at roughly 1.8 seconds — wait for it.
  • Punishing mid-burst. Her strings are short but they are not free. Wait for the end.
  • Backing away from red. Red ignores guard and parry. Dodge into it for Ghostep.
  • Skipping the Young Mistress quest. No quest, no phase 3, no Jade Dancer or Iron Fiend.
  • Burning all your heals in phase 1. Phase 2 is a fresh bar and phase 3 adds two more.

Quick Pre-Fight Checklist

  1. Complete the Young Mistress questline before reaching Lakeside.
  2. Equip a fast weapon and confirm your parry timing on blue tells.
  3. Practice dodging the crimson ring finisher as separate inputs.
  4. Enter with full heals and a weapon-swap ready for a Sha-Chi refill.
  5. Confirm you can reach Breach reliably before committing to the run.

If you are routing the rest of the region, our boss order guide shows where Mu Xiaokui sits relative to the other Village of Lu fights, and the walkthrough covers the surrounding chapter.

Sources & confidence

Primary source is the AllThingsHow Mu Xiaokui boss-fight guide, cross-referenced against the Kungfupunk and pbz.guide boss compendiums for her placement, phase count, and rewards. The biggest uncertainty is the hidden third phase trigger: the compendium states that finishing the Young Mistress fight before this encounter unlocks phase 3, but the exact quest steps and whether any additional condition applies are not fully documented. Treat the Jade Dancer and Iron Fiend health values as reference-difficulty figures, since HP varies by source and cycle.
